What Is Walmart Multichannel Solutions (MCS)? Benefits, Setup, and Costs

Key takeaways

Walmart Multichannel Solutions (MCS) is designed to help sellers simplify fulfillment across multiple channels without adding operational complexity. As ecommerce businesses expand to new marketplaces, managing inventoryorders, and shipping across systems becomes harder to control.

Walmart MCS offers a way to centralize fulfillment by using Walmart’s logistics network for orders from Walmart.com and beyond. Instead of splitting inventory across providers, you can manage everything from one pool within WFS.

In this article, we explore how Walmart MCS works, its benefits, how it compares to Amazon MCF, and how Sellercloud helps you manage multichannel fulfillment more efficiently.

What is Walmart MCS?

Walmart MCS is an extension of WFS that allows sellers to fulfill orders from any ecommerce channel using Walmart’s fulfillment network.

Rather than acting as a standalone Walmart third-party logistics (3PL) service, MCS is built directly on top of WFS. This means you must already be using Walmart Fulfillment Services to access it. Once enabled, your WFS inventory becomes a shared pool that can fulfill orders from your website, marketplaces, and social commerce channels.

Walmart positions MCS as a way to simplify operations while maintaining speed and cost efficiency. Sellers can ship orders in plain, unbranded packaging, offer fast delivery options, and rely on Walmart to manage returns. Importantly, Walmart does not charge marketplace referral fees on orders that originate outside Walmart.com.

Another key advantage is flexibility. Sellers are not limited to a fixed list of marketplaces. MCS can support virtually any sales channel, as long as the products meet WFS eligibility requirements and shipments stay within supported regions.

However, there are clear requirements. Products must meet WFS standards, and certain items, such as oversized or multi-box shipments, are not eligible. Shipping is limited to the United States and Puerto Rico, which may impact sellers with international operations.

Top 5 benefits of Walmart Multichannel Solutions

1. Centralized inventory across channels

One of the biggest operational challenges in ecommerce is inventory fragmentation. When stock is split across multiple fulfillment providers, it becomes harder to maintain accurate counts and avoid overselling.

MCS solves this by using a single inventory pool within WFS. Orders are fulfilled on a first-come, first-served basis, regardless of where they originate. This reduces the risk of stock discrepancies and simplifies inventory planning.

2. Lower fulfillment costs

MCS is, on average, more cost-effective than competing fulfillment providers. While exact pricing varies, sellers typically pay for storage, fulfillment, and return processing.

A key cost advantage is that Walmart does not charge referral fees for off-Walmart orders. For sellers expanding beyond marketplaces, this can significantly improve margins.

3. Fast and reliable shipping

Speed is critical in ecommerce, and MCS supports competitive delivery options. Sellers can offer two-business-day shipping or standard delivery within three to five business days.

Walmart also reports high on-time delivery performance and tracking accuracy. This helps maintain customer satisfaction across all channels.

4. Unbranded packaging for multichannel selling

Unlike some fulfillment providers, Walmart ships MCS orders in plain packaging. This is important when fulfilling orders for other marketplaces or your own website.

It ensures the customer experience aligns with your brand, not the fulfillment provider.

5. Simplified returns management

Returns are a major operational burden for growing sellers. With MCS, Walmart manages the returns process, including label generation, receiving, and inspection.

After inspection, items can be restocked, disposed of, or returned to the seller based on predefined rules. This reduces manual work and helps maintain inventory accuracy.

How is Walmart MCS similar to Amazon Multi-Channel Fulfillment (MCF)?

Similarities

Walmart MCS and Amazon MCF both allow sellers to use marketplace fulfillment networks to ship orders from external channels. In both cases, inventory is stored in a centralized network and used to fulfill orders regardless of origin.

They also share core capabilities such as fast shipping, returns management, and the ability to scale fulfillment without building your own infrastructure.

Differences

Despite these similarities, there are important differences. Walmart MCS requires sellers to use WFS, while Amazon MCF is tied to Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA).

Packaging is another key distinction. Walmart uses unbranded packaging by default, while Amazon may include branded elements depending on configuration.

There have also been policy changes that affect how these services interact. Previously, Walmart restricted sellers from using Amazon MCF to fulfill Walmart orders. That restriction has since been lifted, giving sellers more flexibility in how they manage fulfillment.

Pricing and service structures also differ, which can influence which option is more cost-effective depending on your business model.

When to use Amazon MCF and Walmart MCS

Choosing between Amazon MCF and Walmart MCS depends on your existing operations. If most of your inventory is already in Amazon FBA, MCF may be the easier option.

However, if you are expanding beyond Amazon or looking to reduce fulfillment costs, Walmart MCS can provide a strong alternative. Many sellers use both services to diversify risk and maintain flexibility.

How to set up Walmart MCS

Setting up Walmart Multichannel Solutions involves configuring your WFS account and preparing your products for multichannel fulfillment.

Start by ensuring you are enrolled in WFS and have a valid billing method in place. Only WFS-eligible items can be used for MCS, so it is important to review product requirements before proceeding.

Next, configure your items as Walmart-fulfilled. If you plan to use MCS exclusively for off-Walmart orders, you can designate them as multichannel fulfilled, so they are not listed on Walmart.com.

Once your products are ready, send inventory to Walmart’s fulfillment centers through the standard WFS inbound process. Walmart will assign the destination locations.

After inventory is received, create your sales channels in Seller Center. You can define channels such as your website or third-party marketplaces, assign ship-from addresses, and configure packaging settings. Each channel will generate a unique ID used for order routing.

Finally, begin submitting orders. You can do this manually, through bulk uploads, or via API integration. From there, you can track order status, monitor fulfillment, and manage returns within the MCS workflows.

Challenges of using Walmart MCS

Product eligibility is one of the most common constraints. Oversized, bulky, and multi-box items are not supported, which may exclude certain product categories.

Geographic limitations also apply. As mentioned above, MCS currently supports shipping only within the United States and Puerto Rico. Sellers with international customers will need alternative fulfillment solutions.

Returns handling is another consideration. MCS supports mail-based returns only and does not process exchanges. Refunds must be handled on the original sales channel, which can add complexity to customer service workflows.

Finally, operational complexity does not disappear entirely. As your business scales across multiple channels, managing inventory, orders, and fulfillment logic still requires strong systems. Without centralized control, issues like delayed orders or inventory mismatches can persist, especially for high-volume sellers.

How Sellercloud helps you use Walmart MCS

Walmart Multichannel Solutions simplifies fulfillment, but it does not manage your entire ecommerce operation. As you scale, you still need a way to control orders, inventory, and workflows across all channels.

Sellercloud is an all-in-one ecommerce operations platform designed to centralize these processes. It connects your sales channels, inventory, and fulfillment providers into one system, giving you full visibility and control.

With Sellercloud, you can manage Walmart MCS alongside other fulfillment methods without switching between systems. Orders from different channels are centralized, inventory is synchronized in real time, and workflows can be automated to reduce manual effort.

This is critical for multichannel sellers. As highlighted in ecommerce operations, managing orders across multiple systems without automation can lead to delays, errors, and lost revenue. A centralized platform helps prevent these issues and supports long-term growth.

By combining Walmart’s fulfillment network with a centralized operations platform, you can scale efficiently without adding complexity.
